The Story Behind our Collections: Aden+Anais
Back in January 2010 my sister and I were quite innocent to trade shows as we were in the early stages of planning the Sisters Guild Boutique. We arrived at Bubble London full of wide-eyed wonder, all nervous and excited!
One of the first people we spoke to was a beautifully pregnant Raegan Moya-Jones, the co-founder of Aden+Anais. We touched the muslins all hanging beautifully in a line, we felt broody remembering the swaddling phase and instantly knew that the swaddles, blankets and other designs of Aden+Anais had to be part of what the Sisters Guild Boutique offered.
Raegan is so passionate about the muslin fabric and the benefits of swaddling. We spoke about babies and sleep and sisters of course - chatting about how lovely it would be to have 3 girls (which she now has!) - all the while feeling the soft muslin fabric and swooning over the pretty designs.
Raegans' story starts in Australia where she witnessed how the practice of swaddling babies in muslin sheets helped both sleep and bonding for baby and mama. It was in the USA when Raegan became a mother herself that she tried to find large swaddles - alas, finding them too small, too thick or unappealing she decided to design her own! Thus, Aden+Anais was born.
Raegan created a swaddle large enough to be truly useful to mothers 'not just for swaddling but as a stroller cover, nursing shield, tummy time blanket, or a burping cloth.' Raegan believes in the legacy of muslin - the world's oldest and most cherished cotton fabric - and she sourced the softest muslin she could find to create designs that are modern and stylish yet gentle and charming too. They have certainly charmed the world.
The Aden+Anais collection offers things for mama and baby that are so useful and beautiful - cloths for dribbles, blankets for security and snuggling, soft washcloths for bathtime and sleeping bags for when they are passed the swaddling stage - all made in the softest muslin fabric.
The Aden+Anais sleeping bags are amazing. The cozy winter sleeping bag has 4 layers of muslin which makes it a warm yet still breathable design for colder nights - no kicking-off the blanket and getting chilly in the night! The summer sleeping bag is a single muslin layer which is so ideal for warm nights, especially on holiday, where your baby or toddler still needs a light layer - and when they wriggle about they don't end up with a loose sheet or blanket. They really do help with a good nights sleep!
The Aden+Anais swaddles really are big at 120cm x 120cm (47" x 47") which makes them so useful - I see them used a lot as buggy covers and even as a sarong or scarf for mama too! They are pre-washed which makes them soft to start with and the more you wash them the softer they get. For swaddling they are so easy as they are large and the fabric has a natural 'give' allows the blanket to be tucked snuggly around a baby without being overly restrictive. It was a natural instinct for me to swaddle my baby especially as he was born in December. He looked so beautifully cocconed and cosy and we both enjoyed the ritual of swaddling as it signalled feeding, cuddles, comfort and sleep. Swaddling is an ancient practice and when I see and hear about swaddling it is so reassuring to know that a mother's instinct is still strong.

Wednesday Woo: A Trousseau for a Baby
Trousseau is the French diminutive of trousse which means bundle. A Trousseau is traditionally the possessions, such as clothing and linens, that a bride assembles for her marriage. A Baby Trousseau is therefore the pieces a mother and family and friends gather for a baby - blankets, linens, clothing and keepsakes - some new and some handed down.
May is definitely the merry month of new life. There have been many birth and pregnancy announcements recently and we are feeling rather broody ourselves! There is such pleasure in gathering things for your new baby or presenting something to a friend for their 'baby trousseau,' something that will be treasured.

Swaddle me happy
Swaddling is an ancient practice, a mothers gentle and loving act of wrapping her baby so it is safely cocooned just like in the womb.
Swaddling felt right for me and Gabriel from day one. It was instinctive perhaps because it was winter and also because Gabe had constant flayling arms - I later read that boys tend to have the 'moro reflex' stronger and for longer, and Gabe certainly did so he was swaddled for a long time and it mostly made for calm bedtimes and restful nights.
Some babies may not be so keen on swaddling but most enjoy the initial sense of being wrapped and cocconed. I have to say that I also liked the neat little bundle they become when they are swaddled.
Swaddling became part of our bedtime ritual, the swaddling and feeding being a consistent sign that sleepy time was here. I also used a smudge of Badger baby balm (from Infinity Foods or online here from my fave new skincare site lovelula.com) on the swaddling, which was another sleep association. I'm not saying any of these things are guaranteed baby sleep techniques as I reckon that following our own instincts is the only way, but these little things helped me be calm and that was the key (didn't stop bedtime being horrendous sometimes, but I shall choose to forget those moments especially now that I'm thinking about having another baby!)
If anyone is looking for a book recommendation then I can say that Gentle First Year by Gowri Motha is a book that is really encouraging and made me feel confident in my instincts. Not sure that with a second baby I will have quite so much time to lie around and sleep and massage and be in a newborn baby bubble for so long, but it's lovely thinking about it!
To swaddle you need a large enough blanket, piece of fabric or ideally a large muslin that will fold into a large triangle shape, with 2 points of the triangle long enough to wrap around. It's best described here. I did struggle with blankets that weren't large enough and actually ended up with only one perfect swaddling blanket, a knitted blanket from my sis that I shall treasure. I genuinely wish I had found Aden+Anais swaddling wraps when Gabe was a baby as they are so large and perfect and have so many other uses too. Muslin really is a perfect fabric - soft, breathable and comforting. My future baby things wish list is shaping up nicely...and I'm getting broody for sure.

Enraptured
Last weekend we went to Bubble London and were enraptured by the collections from the designers and illustrators that are making our children's lives full of wonder...and giving us lot's of pleasure too!
The creations of Belle and Boo we absolutely adore. Belle and Boo really speaks to us of our own childhood, roaming about the meadows, orchards and woodland beyond the Somerset home of our younger days (maybe with a bit more mud and messier hair than Belle and her friends!).

As sisters we recognise each other in the sulky faces of the dolls - aptly named Imp, Pixie and Cheeky - and with three children between us we can see their characters too. We just know many mums will fall in love with the collection and their little ones will find some favourites to treasure amongst the cushions, dolls, clothes and prints.
We felt privileged to meet Mandy Sutcliffe herself, the illustrator who has created the world of Belle and Boo, and can't wait to open the Sisters Guild shop with some of her pieces.
We came across Aden & Anais at the beginning of the year and with the memory of our own babies in the swaddling phase we just knew we had to include these swaddling wraps in the Sisters Guild shop. So fine, so soft, and so pleasing. We selected some of the lovely designs, including the swaddling wraps, comforters, sleeping bags and the dream blankets - a blanket so divine and definitely set to be the blanket that will be taken wherever you go for many, many years.
The Little Duckling clothes have been on my mind for some time so it was great to see them again and feel that little 'yes, yes please!'. Rosa creates thoughtfully finished pieces that have a wholesome feel. The boys collection is more refined and subtle than most of the boys ranges you see - these are 'handsome' clothes - 'scrummy' we would say! It was nice to actually get excited about boys clothing as usually the squeals of delight are reserved for the girls clothes. Rosa really knows how to design without following the usual gender-led patterns.
We will be launching our shop with the current season collection which are the perfect pieces for the summer season of outdoor fun and play.
And as we are now learning to think ahead we have selected some pieces for AW10 - earthy and wholesome - and the SS11 too - fresh, breezy and nautical.
We came away from Bubble knowing we had found some collections that fit so well into our vision of Sisters Guild (more about us to come)
