My Heart, My Home, My Style

I spend a lot of time in my kitchen; morning, noon and night and all the snack-grabbing, at-the-table-doing-homework and catching-up-with-friends-over-a-cuppa times in between. When I think of my kitchen its full of colour, full of flavour, full of inspiration to cook big beautiful stupendously scrumptious dishes. Its about fun, the noise of banter with friends and family whilst whipping up platters of that oh so splendid homemade food. I think colour. I think large plates passed around a noisy table of chatter with friends.  I see cups filled with daisies the children freshly picked  from a morning in the park placed next to mismatched napkins that sit together at the table unique and treasured as each of its guests.

Practical no longer equates dull. We try to echo this with a collection in the boutique where the kitchen isn't just a place to cook but a place to get a kick out of cooking.  The kitchen is the heart of the home and we want to hear it beating, we want it to feel alive! Give me colourful jugs with utensils spilling out, bright melamine mixing bowls, storage jars, a rainbow of cups and cutlery, baskets full of colourful flavours, and spice boxes to take my taste buds on a journey far far away.

Take 1 large dose of practical, add a bag of great design followed by a large cup of versatility then stir in masses of style. It's delicious!

A kitchen for entertaining as much as for rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in. Because that's our style!

There are more pieces on their way too so be sure to keep in the loop as we await their arrival.

Monday Makery - Patchwork Flowerpots

Valentines Day and Mothers day is soon upon us and both days are days we show our love and appreciation. We want to make sure we give the people we love something that will last and something they can keep as reminder of our love. I love the idea of giving people seeds or bulbs as a gift, something that can grow bigger each day. So we've set about making fabric covered flower pots. As you can see they're still wet but once they're dry we'll get planting.
I'm going to make pretty envelopes with seeds inside with the words 'love grows bigger every day' written upon them to give to the girls on valentines morning. They'll have fun planting the seeds and taking care of them as they watch them grow and blossom into beautiful flowers.
They're so easy and so fun to make and with little materials you can turn a boring plastic pot into a beautiful planter or storage pot.
I'm planning on making a small stack of pots for my mama too for Mothers Day with her favourite flowers panted in each one. I'd like to have a row of them upon my desk for keeping my pens and pencils in too! So I'll be sure the girls show their daddy how to make them.

Here's what you'll need:
  • flower pots - we used standard plastic ones
  • PVA glue
  • bowl
  • water
  • fabric
Here's how:

  1. Cut strips of fabric,
  2. mix PVA glue with water in a 50/50 ratio
  3. glue your strips of fabric onto the pot as neatly or as randomly as you like, smoothing out each piece as you go to avoid creases.
Even though I took a more mathematical approach to mine; measuring the top of the flower pot dividing that number between the number of fabric strips to get the width of each fabric and then the same for tapering the fabric at the bottom I think Oona's looks so much better for having just gone with the flow of it.

If you'd like to have your pots kept outside you will have to varnish them to make them waterproof and to seal the fabric from the elements.

Happy Making

Bobo Choses Petit Grocery SS13 Collection Is Here!

PETIT GROCERY JEAN GUSTAV

Jean Gustav has a grocer’s soul and an elephant’s body,
and all his customers know the taste of
a tomatoey tomato or
a carroty carrot or
an appley apple or
a lemony lemon
due to the simple but very important fact that they
buy their fruit and vegetables chez Jean Gustav.
When you open the door and go inside,
Jean Gustav tips his hat ‘hello’
and the smell of newly baked bread
takes you by the waist and follows you
up and down the aisles of the grocer’s shop...
Colours, shapes and flavours greet you, each with their own voice.
Every time someone bites into and savours
something from Jean Gustav’s,
they remember the kindly elephant with the grocer’s soul.
If you’re ever in the neighbourhood, go in and meet him.

Monday Makery - Telescopic Adventures

The cold weather and dark colours of winter have me hankering for some brighter sights. Not playing outside very much but rather opting to stay in the cosy warmth of home, we've been playing pirates with tables turned upside down for ships, cushions on the floor making stepping stones over the crocodile swamp and toilet roll telescopes as we look out to sea for islands that might hold handsome treasure.
We discovered the African Savannah as we sailed across the Sitting-Room Ocean and at night we gaze up at the planets in the sky. We even saw a group of circus animals rehearsing for their performance!
Your travels and adventures can take you to wherever you want to go all you have to is imagine it.

Here's what you'll need:

  1. Toilet roll/ kitchen roll cardboard tubes
  2. Paper
  3. Small pictures you can draw, cut from magazines, printed from images found or perhaps printed holiday photos
  4. Scissors
  5. Sticky tape
  6. Glue stick
Here's how:
  1. Take a toilet roll tube and open it up by cutting along the length.
  2. Then, cut it into strips about an inch wide.
  3. Taking a piece of sticky tape and recreate a circle with the strip by using the sticky tape to bridge a gap of about an inch, widening the circle which you will use to create a cap for the telescope.
  4. Cut out a circle of paper about 2cm larger than the diameter of the cardboard tube and draw your chosen image.
  5. Now, stick the circle over the end of your 'cap' securing it with sticky tape the entire circumference of the card. Decorate however you wish.
You can make as many different caps as you like using different images or perhaps even just different weather.

Aha there me maties... I be seein thaa sister crew tryin a steel me golden treasure

Here's an alternative:

You'll need:

  • toilet roll tube / kitchen roll rube
  • acrylic paint / permanent markers
  • Scissors
  • Clear plastic yoghurt pot lid
Here's how:
  1. Begin by drawing your window onto the plastic lid by marking around the circumference of the cardboard tube.
  2. Draw your desired picture in the window that you've created.
  3. Once the paint is dry cut around the window leaving the upper part of the lid where the ridge is so you can easily lift and slide the window into place.
  4. Finally, cut a slit almost all the way around the end of the toilet roll tube and slide in your window.

We also discovered that the plastic trays that berries are sometimes packaged in work well. We didn't have any to hand but sharpie pens might work very well for this.

Beautiful Play

Sometimes children's toys can be so beautiful they become an intrinsic part of the interior design despite it being by complete chance. Oh how we love the wonderful creations of Danish brand Maileg. Their instantly recognisable colours typical of Scandinavian design, the clean and simple lines, the immediate desire to hold and play. This is the magic of wonderfully, thoughtfully created toys.

Our collection of Maileg pieces is the biggest collection under one roof you'll find anywhere and this season we have lots of new designs about to added to the range.
The new bunnies this season will arrive in their pretty underwear and with an extensive range of clothing to fit each and every one you can decide on their wardrobe choices. There's a new height of bunny being added to the collection too.
We've made sure we have lots of the bunnies and rabbits as you already know them too, because we know how much they are adored and how difficult they are be to find.

To make sure you hear about the new collection as soon as they arrive sign up below

snow

waking up to a blanket of snow has got to be one of the greatest joys of winter. Grabbing anything we could that would make a good sledge including a kitchen tray we headed out for our nearest and highest point. we made snowmen, threw snowballs....mostly ganging up against daddy, found a great sledging track and stuck our tongues out up to the sky to catch the falling snow. Heading home passing by the snow sculptures (oh yes there were many enthusiasts that made our attempt look a little pathetic albeit traditional), and hearing the 'wooooooo's and 'weeeeeeeeeeee's of people sledging and laughter as they came flying off . then home, warm and dry cosying up under a blanket with mugs of hot chocolate to warm our hands and tummies. i hope you've all been enjoying the snow as much as cosying up together.

Monday Makery - Ribbon Rhythm Rings

we are constantly dancing, turning the music on and getting our groove on. I quite often feel sorry for our neighbours who must think we have parties everyday of the week. Sometimes the girls rediscover tap shoes, ballet shoes and musical instruments taking it turns to perform. Grabbing props like; scarves, parasols and recently all the Christmas ribbons that have not made their way back to the box.

So, with a pack of curtain rings picked up at a DIY store some time ago in the bargain bin, which I knew would be useful for some craft or another at some point, we've made ribbon rings.
Originally we were going to make ribbon sticks but as we'll be spending so much more time indoors I thought it made sense making them less dangerous for waving around. The added bonus of them being rings is that the girls can hold a few in each hand.

Here's what you'll need:
  • wooden rings (curtain rings are perfect) but the inside of sticky tape rings are a great way of recycling, even bangles can be used so long as they're sturdy enough not to bend when being held in the hand.
  • Ribbon. If the ribbon is too light it won't give that great twirl and flow
add coloured tape to the rings for decoration or paint the rings to make them a little prettier. You can even tie little bells onto the ribbons before tying them to the ring. Strips of pom poms make pretty versions too.
If you can't find rings why not use pencils with an eye hook screwed into the eraser end and then ribbons tied onto the hook. They'd make a great party bag gift too!

Here's how:
  1. using the eye hook on the curtain tie a length of ribbon and knot it. Cut the shorter end off to keep it neat. If you're not using curtain rings simply tie to the edge of the ring that you're using.
The length of ribbon will depend on the height of the child and you can use one single piece or as many colours as you like.

Let's dance!

Colour Me Happy

Who can take interiors and dip them in a dream? Sisters Guild Can!

adding a splash of your favourite colour can be as simple as defining a new favourite place with a soft cushion, adding a touch of light charm with lamps and candelabras or keeping clutter at bay with fun storage boxes.  A new piece of wall art can enhance and refresh a room and colourful vases can add romance.

Pink is not just for girls. It is a colour that expresses compassion, nurturing and  love. An innocent colour, tender and calming, thoughtful and romantic, comforting and caring, intimate  feminine, sweet and naive.
It is the colour of innocence but used in the right hands can be strong and authoritative. A feel good colour which lends itself well to play with other colours. Some colours relax, others excite; pink does both.
