I know, I know, It is perhaps a little early to start with the Christmas decorations but with only 7 weeks to go before Christmas is here and with the weekends being booked up with visiting family, Christmas shopping and trips to the theatre planned I am not wanting to leave anything 'til the last minute. Besides we've got so many makeries lined up for you we thought we had better start early.
This week we're bringing you an assortment of beautiful creations all made with paper and card.
They're easy and fun to make, colourful and requires minimal tools and media.
We'll guide you through each one and we'll be bringing you different themes and creations each week. So, there'll be lots to choose from and lots to keep children busy. Here we begin with a festive garland, though you can use these as decorations for any occasion and you can play with different colours to suit.
Here's what you'll need:
Coloured paper, card, wrapping paper or scraps of wallpaper
Scissors
Pencil
Ruler
Paper clips
Needle and thread
Glue - either pva or gluestick is perfect
*a little hint on paper - Designers Guild's Sales are a great way to pick huge rolls of wallpaper at £3. a roll. It makes wonderful wrapping paper, great for crafts as well as lining cupboards and wardrobes. I pick up armfuls of them in as many designs as I can carry !
Here's how:
Cut a strip of paper - 10cm by 30cm for the larger and 6cm by 16cm for the smaller.
Starting with the smaller side, the width, fold over about 1cm then turn the paper over and fold over again back on itself. Keep going to create a concertina with the strip of paper.
Bend the stacked concertina in half to mark the centre of the fan and tie a piece of thread around the middle to hold the centre together.
Open up each opposing side like wings and glue together. We used a paper clip to hold them together whilst the glue dried.
Repeat steps 1-4 until you feel you have enough to create your garland.
Thread your needle and string up the circles in whatever order and pattern you like.
Paper Dove Decorations
I love how versatile these hanging birds are. We've been making them to hang along the banisters for some instant festive fun but I'm quite tempted to make some miniature ones for the tree and perhaps a mobile to hang as a centrepiece above the table.
They're incredibly easy to make and only require very basic materials to put together.
Here's what you'll need:
card
pencil
scissors
needle and cottton for hanging
Here's how:
Create a template for your bird onto card. It really can be a very simple outline as you can see from the one we drew!
Using your template draw and cut out as many birds as you like.
Bend the bird in half softly so not create a crease and make a cut in the centre. This is where you'll thread the wings.
Take a piece of coloured or patterned paper or card and make a fold up from the bottom about 1cm then turn the paper over and fold back on itself. Keep going to create a paper concertina.
Feed the concertina paper through the centre of the bird and fan out its wings.
Hang them up by threading cotton above their wings. Group them together to create a focal point in a room, string them up along the banisters or create a love-dove mobile with mistletoe.
Festive Hanging Bulbs
I remember making these when I was young and who knew making paper onions was like riding a bike, once you know how you never forget!
You can make them more festive with deep reds and festive patterned paper but we were rather drawn to the bright colours in our stack of paper and card.
Here's what you'll need:
thick paper or card
scissors, pen and ruler
gluestick
needle and thread for hanging
Here's how:
Begin by cutting your card into 5 strips. You can vary the lengths as you wish depending on how big you want your decorations to be, the ones we made here are made with 2 strips measuring 11.5", 2 strips measuring 9.5" and 1 strip measuring 8".
Line the strips of paper up ready for gluing as follows: large, medium, small, medium, large. Glue and stack each strip on top of the other in this sequence then fasten with a paper clip to hold in place whilst waiting for the glue to hold.
Then, begin sticking the other end of strips, curving the paper to meet each end length. Fasten with a paper clip to hold until the glue has dried.
Hang using cotton threaded through the top of your decoration.

Halloween was coming and no occasion goes by in our house without some sort of elaborate affair. The girls wanted to house a party; a candlelit supper with friends. So, out went the invites and in came the ideas to make it a fun yet frightful evening.
We carved pumpkins and lit them around the house, we drew and cut out bats on black card. You can see some above here flying towards the kitchen downstairs, and some sleeping under the stairs. We stuck some to the front of the house and our front door too. Sophia wrote in huge black letters across 3 pieces of A4 paper b o o. We collected as many candles as we could and cupcakes were topped with inedible looking colours of green and orange and black sparkles sprinkled on top!
The girls loved having friends around much later than usual and our candlelit supper was fun but perhaps made more so because we had to keep running upstairs, grabbing our basket of goodies and answering the door to evil monsters, some rather pretty witches, Dracula's, ghosts, a few skeletons and all sorts of freaky looking creatures under 4ft tall!
Off trick or treating into the dark street and Oona of course spent most of the evening clinging to my leg. The streets were so busy with families all in costume and there was such a feeling of close commuinty it was wonderful. Though with Oona rather terrified I carried her along our entire route and back again whilst she was unwilling to knock on the doors with her big sister and friends and she was sad she wasn't managing to get any treats in her little bag! Big sisters thankfully shared all her loot.
When finally we came home our street looked dark and haunting. I turned the key in the door and flicked the lights on. Only they didn't come on! No electricity! Two scared children having been terrified by the tricks they had seen and high on the treats they had munched it was all too much. With our fire glowing to give us light along with the pumpkins and the bats guarding the hallway and still ghouls and monsters knocking on the door we scribbled note 'dear ghouls and ghosts and creatures of the night it is with regret that we have no more treats' and off to find pyjamas we stumbled torch in hand.
With our heavy blackened eyes cleansed, our warts washed away and sugary teeth brushed we all clambered together into bed and read stories by candle light and all fell fast asleep to be woken by all the lights coming back on from their paused position.
Sometimes its the things that are unplanned that turn out to be best part of all.

I'm actually a bit of a cat when it comes to Fireworks. I often prefer to be indoors and watch them from the window. When I do make it to a Firework display I do love the big Bonfire and seeing people's faces as the light fills the nights sky, and one of my favourite things is the chorus of oooohhss and ahhhhhs. It's great to behold the way the dark sky becomes instantly illuminated and then plunges into darkness again. Then the anticipation of the finale and the uncertainty of whether it is actually the end...or just one more!

We grew up in a village on a hill outside Bath and the tradition for us and other families was to go through the woods to the 'plateau' from where you could see the whole of Bath and the surrounding hills - so you got to see at least 5 firework displays. With a bonfire and sparklers, the grown-ups giggling with mulled wine, and then the stumbling home back through the dark woods with a torch, hopefully being carried and then bundled into bed. Now that's something I'd really like to do again.
As for organised displays, the one that is top in my memory is the Battersea Park Fireworks. It's always carefully designed with amazing music - one year it was to the theme of Close Encounters and really was a spectacular Light & Music show.

Today our blog and boutique gets Christmasey...
Over the next few weeks we will be rounding up all those gifts, goodies and decorations for Christmas: stocking fillers for girls and boys, gifts for babies, Christmas gifts for mum, Christmas tree decorations and all things to bring joy, wonder and colour to your home in the festive season.
We are sisters who get giddy over the festivities, so it is with true festive fever that we have gathered together clothing, toys, games, decorations, accessories and more...
We haven't forgotten the fun of getting dressed up for Christmas. ilovegorgeous brings us the requisite silk and sparkle, stars and velvet for girls to step into the party season with style! And when the cold sets in there's nothing better than Alpaca layers from Waddler to feel against your skin, or the lambswool of Hucklebones to cosy up to.
Today we have the pleasure of a very inspiring and imaginative British clothing designer, Faith Tilleray of Damselfly. As a mum of girls Carla is always seeking dresses that make a girl feel divine, through the cut and the fabric, the movement and the thoughtful detail. Carla found such magic in Damselfly and wrote about it here. I've seen Carla's daughter wearing a Damselfly dress, and it really does make you want to go back to being a girl again and feel such clothes against your skin.
Damselfly is a collection of beautifully hand-finished clothing for 'heroines and wayfarers.' It has added much wonder to the British childrens clothing industry. Yet, industry it is most definitely not. Each dress, skirt, coat or cape is made by hand following the 'whole garment system' which means a seamstress works on the whole piece. The result is clothing produced with much love and pride. You almost feel like these are dresses created by magical elves during the night and left draped over the chair for the morning light to shine on all their glorious detail. They are in fact made in Shropshire using sustainable fabrics sourced only in the UK, such as yarn from the Shetland Isles. The new collection for Autumn Winter 2011 is Folk Art and Fairy Tales and it is the stuff of dreams.

We are so enraptured by today's Monday Makery from Catherine over at the Bristol Parenting Cafe. Her blog is full of stories of family life, crafts and adventures, with some beautiful photos. It was a blog we discovered when we launched Sisters Guild and delved into the most inspiring community of what we can only call 'mums who create wonder at home.' It's so great to be able to have a guest makery from one such mama who found a world of creativity with her children.

It’s been a lovely autumn so far with sunny, blue-skied days. We have been spending time outdoors enjoying the mild weather and back at home I’ve been finding pockets full of autumn treasures including leaves, conkers and sycamore seeds. Last week we managed to collect a jar full of acorn caps, which are one of my very favourite autumn finds. There is something particularly magical about their tiny size and how they appear to be perfect fairy or elf drinking cups! We have been busy transforming them into these colourful acorn jewels. Z and E absolutely loved making these so I think they’ll be a few more batches before the season is out.
You’ll need
A selection of acorn caps
Felt-tip pens
PVA glue
White/blue tac
A tray protected with old newspaper.
Glitter (optional)
How to:
Colour in the inside of each acorn cap using your felt tip pens.
Place the coloured acorn cap onto the newspaper-covered tray, with their coloured side up. They need to be upright so use blue-tac on the base to help support them. Make sure the felt tip hasn’t dried out as the glue won’t take the colour and they’ll dry plain white. To be on the safe side you could do a top up the colour just before adding the glue.
Fill each acorn with PVA glue. We used a plastic baby spoon and don’t worry if it spills over the cap as it dries clear.
Leave the acorns until dry (about 24 hours).
In our second batch we sprinkled glitter on the top of the glue as in our house there doesn’t seem to be anything Z and E don’t think could be improved with a bit of sparkle.
Thank you Catherine. They really are like fairy cups or jewels, who'd have thought it's a simple combination of felt tip colour and glue. Of we go on an acorn hunt!

It's our FIRST BIRTHDAY and we've always thought the first is a special one, so we are having a week long party and you are all invited.
