Around the World with You: Winner

 

 

Our blog trip Around the World with YOU has come to an end.  

 

We've been taken to many different places in both hemispheres. It is really interesting to see how the places you have chosen are places of space, of expanse and openness. It's obvious we are naturally drawn to the the wide outdoors, whether it's the green of a grassy park or common, an open space in a busy city, the blue expanse of the sea and sky, the rolling hills or craggy mountains. The only indoor space was The Wolesley and even that space is tall and wide and airy.  Maybe it's in these airy places that our mind rests, our thoughts settle and thus the place remains in our memory more strongly.

We have loved hearing about all these favourite places and sharing them here on our blog with you.

Around the World with You: Full Circle

This is the last week of our blog journey and today we discover 2 different coastal locations on opposite sides of the world. 

Tessa of Down That Little Lane takes us to an Island...

Tessa says: My favourite place is Hamilton Island in Queensland. The Island is small and friendly you can only travel around it by golf buggy so you immediately slow down as you arrive at the island as those little things can only go so fast..

The Island has pure luxury in the form of Qualia Resort or you can rent and apartment and just go basic. There are lots of hilly roads so nearly every place has a view to soak up and the far side of the island has tracks to hidden beaches and the peak where you can see the rest of the Whitsunday Islands. We have visited at least 5 or 6 times in the past 12 years of living in Australia and it gets better every time. The pace of life is slower, the weather is glorious and the waters surrounding it are just that typical picture of paradise.

Thank you Tessa, how I wish I could be transferred there now. Such a serene place.  I hope you get a trip there soon.

One of our regular customers Emma shares a favourite place and a family moment 'by the seaside, beside the sea.'

Emma says: Best friends (and joint lovers of Sisters Guild) sharing a holiday together at the good old British seaside town of Southwold. On the pier with ours husbands and gorgeous children at half term. The perfect photo to remind me of  all my favourite things!!!!

Ahh Emma, thank you. Friends and a shared day can make a place so memorable. It's always good to have that moment captured on camera for posterity.

So, here this blog series ends.   

We have loved hearing about all these favourite places and sharing them here on our blog with you. We've been back and forth across the 2 hemispheres: from the woods of Wimbledon Common, London, to a park in Sydney;  a view of Loch Sheil in Scotland, to a ride in Picton, NZ; from the 'Devils Chair' in Shropshire to the retreat of Oia in Santorini. We've felt our hearts heal at 'Heavens Gate' in our home county of Wiltshire, we took a seat at the Wolesley, sat on a bench in the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris and we heard of a kiss on the cliffs of Beer in Devon.

Each published place will now be numbered and entered into the draw - we will use a random number generator to pick the one to receive the £60 Sisters Guild voucher.  We shall announce the winner next week, on Tuesday 6th November.

Around the World with You: Natasha

This week we blog-travel to a sunnier season in New Zealand, to customer Natasha's favourite place....

Natasha: This is our favourite place in Picton, New Zealand. My son Caleb and Husband Kris are riding on a mini train which travels under a bridge and over a pond tooting its horn as it comes back to it station. Kids just love this ride plus you can also sail mini yachts on the pond. After all this fun you can take a stroll along the waterfront and watch the big ferries come in that connect the north island to the south island. This little gem spot is a winner every time we visit.

Around the World With You - Kylie Smith

Today we travel to the southern hemisphere, to the lower north shore of Sydney and discover a new favourite place in our blog travels. 

Kylie Smith sent us this cute picture taken in Carlson Park 'a little park across the road from our house in Willoughby, Sydney'. This is their favourite place. Kylie says 'It's our favourite place to search for four -leaf clovers, pick flowers to put in our hair, ride bikes around the tiny path or play in the sand pit with friends.'

Around the World with You: Faith of Damselfy

Today we welcome someone who has expressed much enthusiasm for Sisters Guild and who shares a passion for things made with beauty and integrity.  Faith Tilleray of Damselfly creates the most enchanting and ethereal hand-finished clothes. She designs dresses that takes us back a century, with detail that makes us think of magical and historical places.  Faith shares her favourite place, which, quite pertinently, is very pure and stirring:

Faith says:
Here is my favourite place. It's been in my mind as we did a photoshoot up there last weekend. I go up there at all times of the year- it's called Stiperstones and is very near to where we live and run the business in Shropshire. It has a very special atmosphere - slightly strange and very wild. One of the outcrops is called the Devil's Chair but the name doesn't really suit it. It feels powerful yes, but benevolent. The name comes from old times when women used to gather herbs there and celebrate the solstices - women who were named witches because they had powerful knowledge, but were not the evil hags of fairy tales.

The other reason that I love it up there at this time of year is that it's covered in winberriers (the Shropshire word for bilberries). They are delicious little bursts of vitamin C. An old lady in the village here tells a story from her girlhood - the local landowner would pay children who picked enough winberries with a pair of shoes to wear to school. If they didn't pick enough berries they had to wear worn out hand me downs that may or may not be the right size and had been patched with whatever material were available. Another world!

The two photos here were entries in a competition to capture the power of the Stiperstones and I think they got it!  You  can see the little winberry bushes between the rocks. 

Wow, Faith, thank you for showing us this place.  I can imagine it's somewhere to sit and feel the history beneath you. With a feeling that is earthly yet intangible too. What a wonderful story of the winberries - truly something of fairy tales.

Around the World with You: Nissa Redmond

Today we welcome a member of Sisters Guild who shares our enthusiasm for all that is Maileg....along with a passion for a particular city.

Nissa writes:

Even though our family travels extensively (I am Australian & my husband is Irish) we are fortunate to live in our favourite place....London.  With all the sites to see & the wonderful buzz of this most magical summer it truly is a great place to raise children.  Here is a picture of our girls favourite spot in London: The woods of Wimbledon Common.  

This is our favourite picnic spot.  The girls pack their favourite Maileg bunnies in a small suitcase and we create little homes for them in the long grass & heather.  Other times we pretend to be Wombles and try and make something useful from the things that we find on our adventures.  

We are truly blessed to live in such an amazing city rich in culture but also combined with wonderful access to nature in its many parks & commons.

Thank You Nissa.  We wholeheartedly agree - London is full of joy and surprise, and there's so much green space to discover.

Around the World with You: Sian Williams

When we asked travel-savvy Sian Williams, the Founder of Baby Friendly Boltholes, where her favourite place in the world was, we had a feeling we would discover a really special spot. Here it is...

My favourite place changes about once month since I hear about so many amazing places running a site like Baby Friendly Boltholes, however, an enduring favourite is Oia in Santorini. Its filled with romantic little hotels with rooms and balconies cut into the cliff-side all with spectacular views over the lake-like Caldera. The cobbled streets of the village above are crammed with pretty jewellery shops, art galleries and fabulous restaurants. 

My top tip is… Don't follow the crowds to the castle to watch the spectacular sunset but head down to the fresh fish tavernas clustered around the tiny port at Ammoudi (just below the village but rarely found by the crowds)  and watch it there with a delicious meal and wine… heavenly!

What a mesmerising place to behold blue skies and sublime sunsets. Thank you Sian for sharing this Greek Island spot, and the tip too.  I'm dreaming of a romantic anniversary trip in years to come.

Around the World with You: Kate Maryon

It's amazing how our blog journey Around the World has a way of bringing us to a place close to home - to a place made all the more beautiful by someone's personal story.  The inspiring Children's Author Kate Maryon tells us of this place that has a deep emotional resonance for her.

My favourite place in the world is Heaven's Gate on the Longleat Estate in Wiltshire. I discovered it in 1996 when, three days after my mum died, I packed my car and left my life in London behind. I took my two children (then aged 8+6) a bag of clothes, three bicycles and a copy of Pippi Longstocking, and rented a house in Horningsham where I spent the next 9 months grieving. After a month my sister and her three kids joined us and we all lived together for a while. Most mornings, after dropping our kids at school, my sister and I would walk through the incredible woods surrounding us and sit on one of the benches at Heaven's Gate to cry. We cried out our traumatic childhoods, our broken marriages, our lost dreams and the death of our lovely mum. The view at Heaven's Gate is so amazing, almost magical, borderline biblical in it's sweeping beauty that, like a balm, it somehow soothed our inner turmoils. It offered us space to breathe, to feel ourselves as more than the painful drama of our lives. And from that special place we learned, baby step by baby step, to live again.
Now it's a place I go if I'm feeling happy or sad. It offers the most amazing sunsets. It reminds of how wonderful it is to be alive.

Around the World with You: Poppy Norton

This week we continue on our little blog trip ‘Around the World,’ this time with Poppy Norton showing us the way.  Poppy is in our circle of 'Twitter sisters' and we have got to know her since we started out on the Sisters Guild adventure.   Poppy is the super-seeker of all that is stylish on Baby Style File.  Her experience comes from her career as a stylist, a very desirable one we must add.  You must take a look here poppynorton.com for some great inspiration.

And where else can this talented mama, blogger and stylist be found?  Online, she is here @babystylefile and here @poppynorton.  But, we were keen to find out just where her favourite place may be.  As she’s a London ‘gal’ we had our suspicions it would be somewhere in the capital…..and yes, we were right!  It sounds like quite a special place and we are very pleased to add it to the map, and our wanderlust-list!
So, where exactly is it?  Read on...

My favourite place? Well there are quite a few to choose from, New York is quite high up on the list (I love the contrasting architecture and cultures and the fact it's a city where you spend your time looking up). India is also a super special spot (I can't even begin to put down in words how beautiful it is in both colour and fragrance.) But I'm also a big old fan of the city in which I live, London. So much culture, plus I find extreme comfort in knowing that I can get photocopying done at 3am should the urge take me (yes, I know this is a strange way to measure happiness, but there you go.)

One of my most favourite spots in London is a beautiful restaurant called The Wolseley thewolseley.com. Originally a car showroom in the 1920's the interior has been beautifully restored to a state of wow when you walk in (these photos don't really do it justice if I'm honest). But despite being amazingly grand it has a sense of ease about it and you're not made to feel uncomfortable should you rock up in a pair of jeans. It also holds a lot of personal memories for me, it's one of my very happy places. Oh and the cakes are pretty good too! 

Thank you Poppy for introducing to us to 'your place' of fine dining in such a sublime setting.  I am now dreaming of a decadent Afternoon Tea  (without the rascals). It's definitely a place to lust and linger!

If I could find a real-life place that'd make me feel like Tiffany's, then - then I'd buy some furniture and give the cat a name."

Around The World With You - Peggy Juche

Second in the new series 'Around The World With You' we take you to Peggy's favourite place. A favourite place above all others. 

Before we take a look at the place I'd like to first introduce to this wonderful woman, mother, businesswoman and inspirator. Explorer, observer of global loveliness and discoverer of exquisite pieces and places, Peggy goes by the name of @pauletpaula on twitter and blogs over at pauletpaula as well as pauletpaulaphoto.com. Her photos's are simply beautiful, her blogs - yes she has more than one, are inspiring a 'journey of all things cool'. Peggy say's she could 're-decorate, design and 'build' a new kids room every day' and after following her blog for some time now I'm not surprised, with all the delicious and creative things she finds! That's not all....no.....there's more: Peggy has a shop here , an online magazine 'Novalee' here, - designed for the avant-garde parent who want 'a fresh and new perspective on the childrens market'. Novalee magazine is a 'distinctive art, fashion, and photography magazine with a clear focus on featuring cutting edge innovators  in the kids + youth industry'. But in case that's not  enough inspiration, and this is a woman who's creative cup runneth over,  Peggy has also been a rather busy bee creating and orgainsing The Hive; a Eurpoean blog conference where ' Writers from big and small blogs get together ... to learn, network, share, support and most of all get inspired!'.

Peggy is originally from Berlin, moved to Hamburg, started her career in Paris - where she met her husband - moved to London and now lives in Amsterdam! So where in the world, what place of all the places she has been, of all the cities she has known, where, what place would Peggy describe as her favourite place?

Jardin du Luxembourg - Paris - France

This was really difficult. Me the one who loves to travel and to move around the world. Deciding on one beloved place. So I thought: "Where would I go if I had to decide on one last place?" 

The answer was actually really easy: Paris

Now Paris is not the smallest city in the world so where exactly in Paris?

And here I tell you why: The first time I left home for good was when I went to Paris. I had never been in Paris before and only found out afterwards that I was very lucky indeed as I stayed just around the corner from Jardin du Luxembourg. Exactly, not the baddest part of Paris at all.

Paris is where I discovered a new language (I did not understand a word when I arrived), where I started my love affair with delicious food, a never ending one by the way and where my wings of wanderlust grew.

Paris is the city where I met my husband (oh yes, that long time ago) and definitely the city I know best. 

I love Paris.

During this first year I was an Au Pair in a very sweet French family.  Every day, after school pick up, I went to Jardin du Luxembourg with the little boy I had to look after. Every day!

And today, whenever we go back, we spend at least one day here. There is a big and great playground for the kids, poneys, lovely cafes and of course the thing with the boats. You can "hire" a little wooden boat for your kids which they can drag around on the water. It is a must!

So yes, this is my place in this big world and I am here at least once a year, usually during summer and writing this makes me feel really sentimental. Good we will go to Paris in July!

Around The World With You - Kat Molesworth

Here is a woman who should need no introduction, but because there's so much we want to say about her we're going to give one anyway.

Kat goes by the name of @thatkat on twitter, but we call her the oracle, I've never known her not to know the answer to anything and she manages to squeeze the answers into the 140 twitter character allowance. She's funny, scarily smart, and brilliantly inspirational. 

Kat blogs at housewifeconfidential - a no holes barred family blog full of all the beauty and raw emotion of real family living along with some delicious recipes, inspiration and truths wrapped up in a parcel of beautiful writing as well as some of the best photography, it is no wonder she has been a finalist in the MADS 2011 and nominated again this year. 

Our children want to be adopted by her, and her family are a credit to the mother, wife and general superwoman she is.

Though that's not all. Kat is a features and travel editor for the seriously stylish, fabulous fun finding, go-to website bambinogoodies where the  best of everything baby, child, mama, decor and all that's inbetween can be discovered.
And there's more; Kat has recently launched (along with her business partner Kat Goldin) a new adventure with Capturing Childhood, a series of  creative eCourses in recording memories through picture and film

I don't know how she even has time to get dressed in the morning, but I'm assured she does!

So as we begin our new blog series Around The World With You, we, of course, were hugely curious as to where Kat's favourite place is and why. So here it is, the first in the series.  

Beer, Devon, UK.

The first time I visited Beer I was 11, on a residential school trip to Lyme Regis. I rode the miniature steam train at Pecorama with a boy I imagined I was in love with. The next time I visited Beer I was 21 and holding hands with the man I had fallen wildly in love with. We visited the quarry caves, ambled down Fore Street, skipped over the river and kissed on the cliffs over-looking the beach. It’s no coincidence that I returned there with the love of my life. Beer bewitched me on that first visit and it’s had a place in my heart ever since.

Beer is a village nestled between steep cliffs. Its history is rich with fishing, lace, stone masonry and smuggling. These days the fishing boats still thrive but the streets are lined with tourists rather than fish guts. My favourite spot is the allotments on the cliff top – I have two pieces of art depicting that scene in my home.

It’s great in the summer, the cool sea is thronged with swimmers and boats but for me I love to visit in the Autumn. The crowds are thinner and the lingering smell of wood smoke in the air pulls at my heartstrings. Mooch around the art galleries, grab a pasty from Woozie’s and wander down to the crashing sea; you’ll love it.

It is wonderful, the influence a place can have on us, the feeling it gives, the memories made there, a place we often go to again and again even if it is through pictures and memories. I wonder how many other people have kissed upon the cliffs and held hands walking down the shore and the streets of this beautiful place. 

Places like people have special corners of our hearts and we want to say thank you to Kat for sharing her favourite place with all of us and here's to all of those kisses yet to come upon the cliffs looking over the beach.

Where's your favourite place? Perhaps it's granny's garden, your local park, a holiday destination, a museum, or cafe. Perhaps it's a building in your city, a shop window, a shady spot under a tree. Holly Golightly, played by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's says:

"Well, when I get it the only thing that does any good is to jump in  a cab and go to Tiffany's. Calms me down right away. The quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there. If I could find a real-life place that'd make me feel like Tiffany's, then - then I'd buy some furniture and give the cat a name."

Whatever, wherever your favourite place is we want to share it. All you need to do to take part is send us a picture, if you can, of your favourite place and tell us where it is. If you'd like to tell us why even better. We will share each one, each week, here on our blog and we will create an interactive global map of all the places we receive, building a community of people and places and making our global neighbourhood that little bit closer.

So let's make a map, an atlas of our favourite places, be it your favourite place to sit, a little unknown park, a place with a view, grannies garden, a museum, a shop window, a favourite cake shop you enjoy with your children. Whatever, wherever your favourite place is we want to pin it on our map.
